This was one of my favorite projects to work on so far, and spending around a month to complete it helped me spend time on the areas I truly wanted to improve in. I began by gathering reference images of submarines and horror-themed settings, as well as taking inspiration from Fallout and Dead Space. I searched online for images of submarine interiors, as well as images of horror settings to get a better sense of the mood and atmosphere I wanted to create. I compiled all of the reference images into a mood board, which helped me to visualize the overall look and feel of the scene I wanted to create. This mood board helped me to keep a consistent aesthetic throughout the modeling process. I used Maya to create the 3D models for the submarine interior. I used a modular workflow when creating my static meshes for the scene. I referred to the reference images to ensure that the models were accurate. I made sure to include details such as pipes, valves, and gauges to add to the authenticity of the submarine setting. I used Substance Painter to texture the 3D models. I referred to the reference images to create realistic textures and materials, such as rusted metal, weathered paint, and grime-filled props. I imported the 3D models and textures into Unreal Engine 5 to create the scene. I used the reference images to help plan out the layout of the submarine. Using the Modular workflow gave me flexibility on how I could create my scene without straying too far from the reference. I used Unreal Engine 5's lighting and effects tools to create the horror-themed atmosphere. I used the reference images to help create a moody and eerie lighting setup, as well as particle effects such as smoke and Volumetric fog using the Niagara fluids plug-in. After completing the scene in Unreal Engine 5, I exported it to After Effects for post-processing and Rendering. I used reference images to create a color grading setup that matched the mood and atmosphere I wanted to convey in the scene. Overall, by using reference images throughout the design process, I was able to create a cohesive and realistic scene that accurately conveyed the horror-themed atmosphere I was aiming for.
